Hamlet Council

The municipal government in Aklavik operates as a hamlet council with a mayor and Councilors. The Hamlet of Aklavik maintains the municipal services for the community.

The Aklavik Community Corporation manages the land claims membership’s interest. The Hunters and Trappers Association manages land, water and animals.

Inuvialuit Settlement Regional

Aklavik is part of the Inuvialuit Settlement Region. The region as created under the Inuvialuit Final Agreement signed in 1984, giving the Inuvialuit financial compensation and ownership of 91,000 square kilometres of land including 13,000 square kilometres with subsurface rights to oil, gas and minerals. The Inuvialuit Regional Corporation was created in 1986 to oversee the affairs of the settlement outlined in the final agreement, such as continually improving economic, social and cultural well being of Inuvialuit. Each Inuvialuit community, such as Aklavik, has a community corporation with elected directors. The directors of the six community corporations elect a chair or chief executive offer to the IRC. Each elected chair from all six communities join the chair of the IRC on the IRC Board of Directors.
