Yellowknife, N.W.T., - Hay River's aging Don Stewart Recreation Centre will be replaced in the next few years.
Mayor Kelly Schofield said the facility, which has been around for over 30 years, needs to be replaced in the next five to 10 years.
He said they still have to do a lot of planning, like figuring out where the new centre should be located.
"I think the concensus in Hay River is they'd love to have it downtown, it's great when we have curling tournaments, hockey tournaments and swimming tournaments," he said. "The restaurants are downtown, the stores are downtown, everything's within walking distance."
He said that might mean demolishing the Don Stewart to make room for the new facility.
Schofield said they still have to come up with money for the project.
They've already set aside $1 million, and they've raised user fees at the current facility to get additional funds.
