Aklavik’s artistic qualities have helped its tourism industry. As well, hunting, fishing, wildlife viewing and eco-tourism all attract visitors to the region. Aklavik is a promising tourism market for those interested in unique experiences exclusive to those with a taste for rugged adventure.
The community overlooks the beautiful Mackenzie Delta and Richardson Mountains and is surrounded by natural resources. Oil, gas and mineral exploration camps are booming in the region and need workers to help operate them.
Again, many residents still practice traditional lifestyles, making hunting, fishing and trapping an important part of the economy. Local fish include arctic char, grayling, jackfish and whitefish. Beluga and bowhead whales are also harvested. Caribou, fox, and muskrat are also harvested for profit.
