Aklavik is located on the Peel Channel of the Mackenzie River Delta. 
It is about 58 kilometers west of Inuvik and 113 kilometres from the Arctic Coast and the Beaufort Sea. Aklavik is an Inuvialuit term that means “place of the barren land grizzly bear.”
